TOP TIPS
Heavy equipment training specialist Jay Collup offers the following three tips
that he believes will benefit any machine operator.
 Read the manual
 Collup states the operation and
 maintenance manual is key for
understanding the basics of any piece of
heavy equipment, like how to get into the
 machine’s computer system and where
 all the components are.
“Anything and everything that’s in that
machine is right there in that book,” he
said. “Unfortunately, if you asked 100
operators, I bet 98 of them would say
they’ve never pulled the operation and
maintenance manual out and had a
 look at it.”
 Know your throttle
Collup points out throttle control is
 crucial when operating heavy equipment,
but he believes most people who lack
proper training will likely not understand
the best way to do it and also how
important it is to have sufficient hydraulic
 power to do the work.
operators how to inspect them correctly, and then we go out into the field,”
he said. “There’ll also be a follow-up down the road to ensure that the operators
are staying tuned in and doing all the things they’re supposed to be
 TRAINING
 Be aware of
 your surroundings
 Collup stresses machine operators need
to keep a sharp eye on not only what’s
going on with their equipment but also
everything else within a 30-metre radius,
such as the locations of other workers
 and machines, potential obstacles and
safety hazards. Part of the awareness,
he says, is actually getting out of the cab
and having a good look around.
Sometimes, however, clients prefer that Collup simply do one-on-one
evaluations and training in the field, where he can watch individual operators
working in their machines and offer suggestions and critiques as they
 perform different tasks.
