Every load of sand dumped had to be inspected by the military bomb
squad for unexploded ordinances. At the end of every shift, they were taken
to a safe zone and detonated.
“It was a bit nerve-racking for the scraper operators to lift their bowl and
see multiple shells bent over their cutting edges,” said Ungar.
Scott returns full-time
As the company was becoming increasingly noticed for larger projects, Ungar’s
son, Scott, made the decision to return to the company full-time and serve as
the vice president in 1998. Scott was 16 when he and his father tackled their
first derailment for CN in 1985. Fifty-six cars loaded with copper, zinc, lumber
and paper had derailed in a large slough at Amsterdam. They worked 30 days
and nights on that site with each taking a shift operating theD8H winchcat.
After graduating, Scott moved to Saskatoon to attend the University
of Saskatchewan, then worked across western Canada during summers
in the pipeline industry. He worked for a variety of companies including
Waschuk, Majestic, Prairie and Banister Pipelines before joining GUC on
a full-time basis.
Shortly after Scott assumed his new position, underground utilities were
targeted as the next opportunity for development. Their bid was awarded
for a significant water and sewer project on the west side of Yorkton for the
Yorkville utility Board, which led to the creation of the company’s municipal
infrastructure group.
Diversity was sustainability so the logging division existed from 2000
to 2008 mainly due to a contract with Louisiana Pacific (LP) that kept the
crews busy in the winter months loading approximately 40 railcars per
week (one-seventh of LPs requirements) with aspen short wood bound
