develop into functional facilities that serve communities fosters a sense
of pride in our workmanship. Ours and companies like ours provide fundamental
services including water, waste and transportation. Our families
and staff live in many of these Saskatchewan communities and we are all
 proud to contribute to them.”
She adds that throughout the years, the company has learned that the secret
to success is creating strong teams within each project and leadership
within the supervisory structure is essential.
“Leaders must be willing to train and develop the upcoming leaders,
developing the culture of the company. The competitive streak in Scott
and Garry has served the company well. Simply stated, we are competitive.
We are proud of our staff, everyone from the office, to the shop, to the
field – they are the heart of the company and work tirelessly keeping us in
 the game.”
Another aspect to success has been their involvement with SHCA. She
said that it is a respected collaborative group lobbying for the industry
and in these challenging economic times, it is prudent for industry professionals
to leverage purchasing power and establish fair rates to enable
 sustainability.
For the future, Friesen says that the adoption of changing technology
appears to be the foundation of sustainable development. For example,
GUC has invested in new GPS technology that has increased cost efficiencies,
as design and construction have been tied seamlessly together using
 these tools.
She adds that GUC is interested in design-build opportunities and they
have already conducted some in-house drainage designs, road designs and
even rail sidings. The company is also looking forward to advancements in
 e-powered equipment.
