The North Commuter

Bridge Replacement
Project will make it
easier for Saskatoon
to grow, residents to
get around
By Candice G. Ball
Just as Saskatoon, Sask.’s original
Traffic Bridge played an integral role
in the founding of the city, the North
Commuter Parkway and Traffic Bridge
Replacement Project will have a major im-pact.
With an estimated price tag of $252.6
million, it’s one of the largest infrastructure
projects in Saskatoon’s history and is set to
address transportation woes and ready the
city for future growth.
When the communities of Nutana,
Riversdale and Saskatoon agreed to join
and become the City of Saskatoon, one of
the conditions was that a bridge be built
across the river to join the communities.
The original Traffic Bridge opened on Oct.
9, 1907, offering residents an alternative to
an unreliable ferry service. More than a cen-tury
later, the city’s continued growth has
created a need for additional infrastructure.
The federal, provincial and municipal
governments are funding the public-private
North Commuter Bridge Pier 1 construction
