great guys out there on site. That’s some-thing
I see George as being very forward-thinking
on,” says Nordin. “He is very
old-school and traditional in many ways
but certainly not in all.”
Wilson is proud of his crew and their
commitment to quality work. Young and
energetic with lots of enthusiasm to learn,
it’s not uncommon for him to take a road
trip to visit his crews.
“When I go see the team paving and
crushing or whatever, it brings me a thrill
to see what’s going on,” he says.
Next generation
As expected, there are some generation-al
challenges that arise from running a
business with a 92-year-old. But for Sean,
it’s more about understanding the unique
learning opportunity he has in working
alongside his grandfather.
“This learning experience, I don’t think
anybody else really has that. They talk
about second and third-generation com-panies
not doing so well and not being able
to survive. But our transition has been such
a long one that I’ve picked up pretty much
every aspect of how he’s been successful in
running this company. I’m very fortunate,”
he says.
When considering his own future, both
personally and with the company, Wilson
plans on continuing to do what he’s been
doing his entire life, simply because going
to work each day makes him happy.
“I wouldn’t do anything else. I don’t want
to sit at home and look out the window or
watch TV. It’s like the doctor says, the big
thing in life is to stay active. You’ve got to be
out and active and looking ahead and that’s
what I enjoy doing,” he says.
Wilson may not have expected to be
named one of the province’s pioneers in his
industry, as he was by Premier Brad Wall in
his victory speech this past spring. But his
business sense, family support and confi-dence
to follow through on great ideas are
what make Wilson a shining example for
the province. As Tommy Douglas once said,
“My friends, watch out for the little fellow
with an idea.”
