another idea came upon him to purchase a
gravel truck, establishing what would years
later become G.W. Construction Ltd. But
owning two businesses before turning 30
wasn’t time-consuming enough for Wilson.
“I had saved enough money so I bought
a truck and started trucking and never
looked back. I ranched at the same time
and after that, things got better so I bought
some land and started farming.”
Wilson continued mink ranching, trucking
and farming, and then the idea – and business
– of crushing gravel was added to the mix.
“To buy a complete crushing spread
back in the early ’60s was $105,000. It
was a lot of money. But I had enough
guts and nerve,” he says. “All I had was
$5,000 of my own money and so I fi-nanced
the balance. That same year, I
had it all paid up.”
Wilson does well to remember the chal-lenges
and hardships he overcame during
his early years in business.
“In my days, when there was nothing
for nobody hardly, money was scarce, the
Depression, the drought and so on, I lived
through it all,” he says. “It grew from nothing
to something. When you start with nothing,
to have what there is now is something that’s
tough to accomplish. But I did it.”
