WORKERS’ COMPENSATION BOARD
The Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation
System: A Vision for the Future
A discussion with the WCB’s new CEO and members of the Board
and Executive about the future direction of the organization
By Pete Paczko, Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board
“We’re committed to putting the time and effort into building relationships
with workers and employers to make the kind of improvements necessary
to achieve our vision to eliminate injuries and restore abilities.”
That statement neatly sums up Phil Germain’s vision for
the future of the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation
Board (WCB) as the newly appointed CEO. The organization’s
customers include the almost 50,000 Saskatchewan businesses
that pay WCB premiums, which cover the cost of injuries
sustained by workers in the province.
Germain has extensive experience as a health and safety professional
and has been with the WCB for almost 15 years in various
leadership roles. He’s excited about the opportunity to work with
the organization’s stakeholders to shape the direction of the province’s
compensation system in the years to come.
Germain recently spoke about his new role, his goals and what his
leadership will mean for the WCB’s customers.
What appealed to you about the opportunity to lead
the Saskatchewan WCB?
Phil Germain (PG): “To put it simply, it’s a chance to help create solutions
that benefit everyone – our stakeholders, workers, employers
and health and safety professionals. That may involve changing
the way we do some things, based on research and best practices. I
believe that creates an environment that enables us to better work
together to meet our common goals.”
