It’s no secret that Canada’s truck transportation industry is battling
a chronic shortage of drivers. Some experts are predicting the sector
could be facing a shortage of as many as 48,000 drivers by 2024.
Crizzle says it’s his hope that by studying the factors that force
drivers off the job that the centre will be able offer solutions that will
enable them to enjoy longer and less problematic careers.
“It’s just about trying to improve the job quality,” he said.
“Ultimately if you have people who are healthier, they’re not going
to leave because of those types of injuries, and they’ll stay on longer.
If we can tackle these issues up front maybe people stay in this
sector for 20 or 30 years as opposed to 10 years and then they’re on
workers’ compensation.”
Road safety is a subject Crizzle has been studying for some time.
At the University of Waterloo, he was part of a research group that
studied commercial vehicle operators as part of a review conducted
on behalf of Transport Canada.
More recently, he led a study funded by the Alberta Ministry of
Labour to examine the prevalence of health issues in long-haul
truck drivers, as well as the trucking environment in general. That
study, which wrapped up last year, interviewed hundreds of commercial
drivers from the Wild Rose province to gather information
on their health and wellness, lifestyle and working conditions that
could then be used in conjunction with efforts to promote safe driving
habits.
Although safety in the truck transportation sector has come under
close scrutiny following the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in
April 2018, Crizzle says the implications of his project reach far beyond
