because the table isn’t flexing. But if you place that same sheet of
glass on a couch and then sit on it, the couch cushion is going to
move, and the glass will probably break. If the ground below the asphalt
moves, then it’s inevitable that the asphalt cracks.
Advancements in technology have allowed road builders to become
more efficient and increasingly eco-friendly, both by ways of
the machinery they use and the mixes they spread.
Here are seven innovations in road-surface products and road
building techniques that are driving the future of road construction.
1. Noise-reducing asphalt: One product called Durawhisper is
designed to reduce traffic noise while meeting the specifications
for hot-mix asphalt.
2. Eco-friendly manufacturing: One example is Duraclime, a
warm mix that meets the specifications of a hot mix. Because
it is manufactured at a lower temperature, odour, smoke, fuel
consumption and emissions are reduced during manufacturing.
3. Eco-friendly ingredients: The mix Vegecol is made entirely
from renewable, plant-based material and can be used on major
roads, walking and biking paths. Vegecol is manufactured at a
cooler temperature, reducing its carbon footprint.
4. Computer modelling: Computer modelling is being used
more for designing structures like overpasses, which benefits
taxpayers and results in better performing roadways.
5. Water-saving pavement: Built using porous asphalt or pervious
concrete, water-saving paved surfaces allow stormwater to drain
through the surface into a catchment area below.
6. Perpetual pavements: These are designed to last approximately
50 years, compared to 20 years for conventional pavements. The
trick with perpetual pavement is to design it from the bottom
