Let’’s Get Social
Cary’s Trenching & Trucking Ltd. changes with the times
By Pat Rediger
With hard hat in place and shovel in
hand, Marny Duncan-Cary showcases
her version of the hit Garth
Brooks’ song, “Friends in Low Places” on Facebook –
at least as it pertains to the sewer and water industry.
“These days, people shop differently,” said Duncan-
Cary. “It used to be picking up the phone book and having
a look but now a lot of people don’t shop like that.
We know our social media presence helps to attract
new customers and homeowners who aren’t yet familiar
with our company and our reputation. It’s our intention
that when they see our reviews and find out more
about us, they will trust us with their water and sewer
needs.”
Although despite her enviable singing voice, Duncan-
Cary may not be discovered as the latest singing sensation,
but it’s all part and parcel of a company that has
changed and transformed itself in more than 40 years of
operation. Cary’s Trenching and Trucking was founded
in 1976 by Reg and Wayne Cary in Regina and since 1996
has been owned and operated by Wayne’s son, Trevor
Cary and Marny – his wife – and Dale Hine.
When Duncan-Cary is not handling the business
end of things, she can be found promoting the company
through her social media postings. Check them out
on Facebook and you’ll discover Duncan-Cary and her
colleagues singing such hits as the national anthem on
Canada Day and “Ain’t Misbehaving” on Mother’s Day.
The company is a strong believer in the importance of
social media and the impact it can have on sales. Cary’s
currently has 10 employees and provides sewer and water
services for business and residential customers in
Regina and the surrounding area. It is noted for digging
dugouts, basements for homes, installing farm acreages
and resort water and sewer systems.
“I love music and I have been in the music industry,” said
Duncan-Cary. “I guess I’m just bringing my own talents to
the table. I’m looking within to promote what we have.”
In addition to the musical posts, Cary’s social media
posts also contain videos of various worksites, including
backhoe jobs described a “delicate surgery.”

Competitive advantages
Although Duncan-Cary’s singing ability and clever posts
may help differentiate the company from its competitors,
there are other factors that separate Cary’s from
similar businesses. With a relatively small staff, the faces
of the company are the ones going down the trenches
and doing the work.
Trevor, Hine and the rest of the team pride themselves
on their excellent service. Working all the way
from residential homeowners to entire municipalities
and everything in between, Cary’s will go the distance
to ensure their customers are looked after.
“When towns and municipalities need bigger jobs
done, we will go the distance. What makes us unique is
that we truly care about each person and their property,
it’s not just a job to us,” said Trevor.
Along with years of experience, Cary’s also understands
the importance of training and safety on the job
site to protect their staff and customers. Cary’s is an approved
contractor by the City of Regina, fully licensed,
ensured and bonded. They are certified and their safety
program meets requirements.
“Our staff is fully trained, and we stay up to date with
Saskatchewan Occupational Health & Safety regulations,”
said Trevor. “It’s our intention that, at the end of
the day, everyone gets home safely. Every member of the
crew is experienced, qualified and competent to perform
the tasks at hand.”
While working with many kinds of people who have
different ideas of what they want accomplished can be
difficult, Trevor says that’s one of his favorite aspects
about what he does.
“Every problem is unique and a challenge, no two
problems are the same,” he said. “The earth is different
in different places. The clients are often stressed and
that’s where we step in. Calming them down and helping
people in different situations are aspects of the job
that some people don’t think about. You just have to let
them know it’s going to be okay and we are going to take
care of them.”
