learn what to do. In technical training, they learn the theoretical
underpinnings of their trade, or why they perform tasks the way
they do.
The total length of an apprenticeship also varies, but often lasts
three to four years. At the end of their apprenticeship, apprentices
write the journeyperson certification exam, and as long as
they have the required number of on-the-job hours, earn their
journeyperson certification.
The vast majority of trades in Saskatchewan are non-compulsory
or voluntary. This means that those working in the trade are not
required to apprentice or achieve certification. (The compulsory
trades are construction electrician; plumber; refrigeration and air
conditioning mechanic; sheet metal worker; and sprinkler fitter.)
There is a path forward to certification in non-compulsory trades
even if tradespeople decide not to pursue an apprenticeship. Those
who have gained significant experience in a non-compulsory trade
can apply to see if they qualify to challenge the journeyperson certification
exam as trade qualifiers.
Upgrading training is available in many trades for trade qualifiers
who’d like to sharpen their skills before challenging the certification
exam. Some upgrading training is available online – for instance,
Mobile crane operator, as well as boom truck operator A and boom
truck operator B (the mobile crane operator sub-trades).
A certified workforce is a reputable workforce. Certified journeypersons
have proven their skills and knowledge, which instills
confidence in clients that a business’s staff members have the knowhow
and experience to perform excellent work.
