how you got there. A business can lose a contract or their abil-ity
to bid on a job because of their WCB history. A company can have
no claims for years but may not realize that there is one from their
past with costs trailing into the current year.
What happens in a surcharge position?
Your company can be charged up to 200 per cent more for the same
insurance coverage that your competitor pays in a surcharge po-sition.
That will mean that either you earn less on every item or
service you provide, or you have to charge more than your compet-itor
for the same item or service, making you far less competitive
in the market place. Even worse, if you are in a surcharge position,
your company will be viewed as being less safe and therefore ei-ther
restricted or outright banned from bidding on projects. Also,
if you have issues while on-site with many of the large employers
in Saskatchewan, you may be kicked off the site and have your con-tract
cancelled.
What you can do
Is this a hopeless situation? No, of course not. However, as the em-ployer,
you must take control of your injury management process.

your company, from management on down, truly participate in the
process. As an owner, however, you need to understand and make
informed decisions on all aspects of your injury claim management.
Just because you have someone responsible for either safety or hu-man
resources does not mean that they can manage this process for
you entirely.
