The importance of your WCB
monthly cost statement

Every month the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation
Board (WCB) issues costs statements to all employers,
whether it is online (if you have an online account) or by
mail. So, what do these statements provide? They tell your WCB sto-ry
and if you have costs currently occurring on any claims.
If you get your monthly statement and you see costs, you should
know what they are and what injury claim they pertain to. If you do
not know exactly what claim and employee each cost is associated
with, you need to start asking some questions.
Timeframe matters
Any claim that is ongoing for longer than three months should be
looked at very carefully. This window is beginning to be beyond the
normal recovery time for most workplace injuries. As an employer,
you need to manage this and all claims to ensure your injured work-er
is recovering properly and make certain you aren’t incurring more
expense than is necessary. Being on top of all your injury claims is vi-tal
to your business and WCB rating so that you can control your in-jury
claim costs.
As an example, if you see costs from a claim that happened in
2001, do you know why there are still ongoing costs? These claims
from the past can put you at a distinct disadvantage in your market-place,
especially when bidding on contracts.
If your business has more injury claims than the industry stan-dard
for your group, you will be put into a surcharge position. If you
