change because of the existing standards
that are in place that already include an ex-am
and continuing education.
Looking ahead
This June, the Canadian Federation of
Construction Safety Associations will hold
their annual conference in Halifax, N.S. It’s
at this meeting that things are expected to
really get underway with some big deci-sions
to be agreed upon between the prov-inces
and territories.
“The national sub-committee will pres-ent
the national exam for approval as well
as an amended NCSO agreement,” says
Manuel.
The ideal scenario will be that the stake-holders
will reach an agreement on ev-erything
that’s put on the table to be
considered.
“Once the exam has been approved, we
can more easily set a timeline for these
new elements to take effect,” says Wallace.
“Right now, there’s no timeline because
we’re waiting on the exam to be finished
and approved.”
It is clear that a lot of hard work has gone
into standardizing national safety. However,
there are still some crucial decisions to be
made in order for these changes to be put
into place. But a little more time – and cer-tainly
a little more patience – will go a long
way.
“A lot of things that are going on in each
province have the potential to impact us
all,” says Manuel. “We’ve talked about the
dream that maybe, someday, the require-ments
won’t be any different no matter
where you live or work. At the very least, we
can be leaders and we can do it. Someday,
we’ll get there.”
