lines, keeping them marked and exposed
for a continual visual.
“I travel to our divisions in Regina and
Lloydminster, informing workers of any
changes and visiting crews out on the
road inquiring any questions,” says Potts.
“Workers’ involvement is also a key fac-tor
to our safety program when we’re im-plementing
new initiatives. When a job
hazard analysis is developed, for instance,
they’ll look at various safety hazards and
the risks and how to control them. We’re
always looking for new initiatives we can
put into place and like to switch it up – I’m
already developing ways to present things
differently, for example, more hands-on
demonstrations to make it more interest-ing
for the workers.”
Following Canadian
best practices to ensure
workplaces are safe
In addition to working to reduce injuries,
Potts manages claims, communicates with
employees to make sure they’re back to work
as soon and as safely as possible and conducts
audits for all of ASL’s locations. Last year the
company started using an occupational
health and safety management informational
software system developed by CorePoint that
is customizable to the company.
“We can input the training each worker
has completed and what crew they’re on,”
she explains. That information can then be
filtered according to age group or years of
experience when an incident is entered, as
can the types, nature or mechanism of an
incident.
“It breaks down the whole incident in-vestigation
process,” she says, analyzing
statistics and helping her to see incident
trends at the click of a button, “and seeing
where we should put most of our focus.”
The system will also send automatic email
notifications to remind her in advance
when workers’ safety certifications will be
expiring.
“There’s always been an excellent safety
culture at ASL Paving,” she says. “In 2015,
one of our employees received his 50th safe-ty
award.”
For more than 50 years, a representative
from ASL has been present on the board of
directors of HCSAS, she notes, nine as the
association’s president. ASL was among the
first of Saskatchewan contractors to de-velop
a safety program to ensure the safe-ty
of employees, suppliers and the general
public affected by its activities. In 2010, the
company was one of the original signato-ries
to the Saskatchewan Health & Safety
Leadership Charter. Potts herself has served
as an association director since 2014, meet-ing
with other industry professionals on the
board four times a year to discuss industry
safety concerns.
“It keeps us up-to-date and also helps me
make a difference in the industry,” she says.
She appreciates the support and input of
other safety professionals, whether on the
board or elsewhere in the industry.
“There’s no competition in safety,” she
says. “And the continual support from the
company’s owners for the safety initiatives
put forward by the workers themselves is
really encouraging as well.”
