No employer wants to see employees get hurt. Sadly,
even with a strong safety program, sometimes accidents
happen. How you choose to deal with these unfortunate
realities can make a huge difference in the success of your
business.
Studies have shown that the longer injured workers are away
from work, the less likely it is that they will ever return to productive
employment. Workers who return to work as soon as possible usually
recover faster and are more productive.
Not only due to the above facts, but also because it is provincially
mandated through legislation, your company needs a return-towork
(RTW) program.
The more in-depth and detailed, with the ability to be flexible
to an individual’s position and specific injury, the less your dayto
day business will be impacted when an employee gets hurt on
the job.
INJURY SOLUTIONS
By following the five “Ws” of creating a RTW program listed below,
you’ll be armed with all the information you need to get started
on establishing your own policies and procedures, or improving
those already in place.
WHO is involved?
Saskatchewan legislation dictates that all businesses must have a
documented RTW program and can be financially fined for not having
one.
The program must be sufficiently documented and explained to
all staff so that they are aware of what is expected of them if/when
an injury occurs.
Programs should be adjusted to fit the individual business
type and site. These can be obtained from companies like Injury
Solutions Canada Inc. at a reduced cost for all Saskatchewan Heavy
Construction Association members.
