Keywords
When creating website copy, it is important to maximize the use of keywords.
Keywords are the words or phrases that people use in search engines
to find the websites or content they are looking for. They essentially
drive traffic to specific websites. While short-tail (narrow) keywords are often
searched more frequently, it is more difficult to rank for them on search
engines. Targeting long-tail (broad) keywords, on the other hand, provides
a better chance of ranking higher and higher ranking means more traffic.
Backlinks
A backlink is a link to one website from another website. Backlinks from
complementary businesses or industry associations and professionals enable
firms to get in front of a larger audience as well as drive qualified traffic
to their websites. In addition, Google picks up on backlinks and will increase
its trust in a business if it sees other trusted sites pointing to it. More
trust from Google leads to higher rankings, which leads to more traffic.
Social media
Social media is one of the most popular free marketing tools around and
can play a role in driving traffic to a website. Platforms such as Facebook,
Instagram and LinkedIn can be used to promote blog posts and other useful
pages on a website. Businesses can turn their social media audiences
into website visitors and draw traffic from their networks if a post has
shareable content. The use of hashtags on posts promotes website pages
and blog posts, which can extend a firm’s reach beyond its network. The
more eyes on a link, the more unpaid traffic a website will receive.
Blogs
Blogs add interest and variety to a site, but also help drive traffic. Using an
industry expert blog on a site will increase traffic through organic searches,
but also because of the expert’s audience connections. Alternatively, a business
may ask an industry expert to mention their business in a review or
round-up post. This method is still free, but collaboration is needed to ensure
the exchange is of mutual benefit. A business can also serve as a guest
blogger on an industry site. This will provide another opportunity to link
back to a business’s website.
There are many components to website creation and acquiring quality
website traffic. Unless a firm employs an in-house web designer and experienced
online marketing staff, hiring external experts is key to designing,
maintaining and sustaining an effective online presence.
