other patented products are bought from various manufacturers and we
are the distributors of those products,” said Duma. “We noticed a significant
change in the industry since we started, especially over the last 10
years. There is more awareness and attention to testing products for safety.
Innovation was needed in this industry and as a result we now have safer
highways.”
Duma says that there are obstacles in getting some new products on the
roadway because they are proprietary systems, meaning only the patent
holder can make them. This concerns the government as officials want to
ensure a competitive market where there are multiple options for contractors
to choose from.
This process takes a lot of back and forth on making decisions and testing
different products. This is a particular issue in Saskatchewan, especially
with cable barriers, as the government is reluctant to put in the newer,
high-tension cable barriers as they worry manufacturers will take advantage
when it comes to maintaining these systems.
“We have been making headway in this front with a few systems installed
throughout the province, with the majority being in Regina and
Saskatoon,” said Duma. “Our goal is all about supplying innovative solutions,
reducing the impact for occupants in accidents and making the roads
a safer place.”
Dealing with the pandemic
Roadside Supply, like businesses throughout the globe, had to take safety
into account when dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak. At the beginning
of the pandemic, the company divided its crew into two groups
and instituted enhanced cleaning procedures to minimize any spread potential.
