SHANTEL LIPP, PRESIDENT, SHCA
Paving the
Way to a Better
Future in
Saskatchewan
We’re building roads that
lead to a brighter future
in Saskatchewan.
Trade and transportation infrastructure is
vital to our economy, as it stimulates growth
and encourages new business partnerships
from outside our provincial borders.
Saskatchewan, given its geographical lo-cation,
has been and always will be a trade-reliant
province, with more than 70 per
cent of our gross domestic product being
our exports. This places heavy emphasis on
our transport infrastructure like roads and
highways.
Despite a challenging budget, we’re
thankful the provincial government contin-ues
to invest in our industry. Global econ-omies
and international trade will not
take a break and wait for Saskatchewan to
catch up. We need to keep feeding our lo-cal
economy.
Investing in infrastructure not only ben-efits
our industry, but it proves valuable to
our provincial government’s image on the
business front. A reliable and efficient net-work
of highways is an attractive trait to
any potential trading partner.
This year, we received a little more than
$860 million in funding from the provincial
government for highways and infrastruc-ture.
Given the challenges facing our prov-ince
today, we’re thankful for this funding,
as it will be invested in the building and re-pairing
of roadways vital to our economy.
This is an area where we as a province
and as a country can improve. Internal
trade as well as trade with the U.S. and
abroad remains a major source of revenue
for our federal and provincial governments.
As always, I encourage you to read this
issue of Think BIG, particularly the pieces
that highlight how the recent budget may
affect our industry. SHCA board chairman
Al Barilla was interviewed for the article on
page 30. As well, there’s an additional story
that includes commentary from John Law,
Saskatchewan’s former Deputy Minister of
Highways and Infrastructure.
