environment. Many eco-friendly projects try to implement as many
green practices as possible, such as:
Lean methods of waste management
Lean management ensures the most minimal amount of waste
without sacrificing productivity, or, in the case of construction, style
or structural integrity. Implementing a lean management program
can help to reduce waste on construction sites to cut down on the
amount of material that ends up in landfills or the environment.
Reduced pollution from run-off
Recently, more attention is put toward construction by-products
mixing with water, either through work processes that use wetting or
through environmental events. The water then seeps into the ground
through the process of natural drainage. Groundwater pollution can
be mitigated or avoided by ensuring that either construction sites
avoid creating dykes or trenches where water and by-products can
accumulate and mix, or by ensuring that environmentally friendly
products are used when there is a risk of exposure to ground and/or
water. A combination of both preventive measures can be put in place
to ensure that run-off is reduced or avoided altogether.
Recycling of demolition by-products
Construction includes erection, demolition and restoration, which
generate by-products that are sometimes reusable. If one company
cannot use them, it’s likely they can find another company that can.
This is environmentally responsible and it may have financial benefits
to the seller of the materials. It also has the potential to mean big
cost savings for constructors choosing recycled materials over new.
Sun and wind power
It is not always feasible to use sun, wind or water to power operations
or equipment during construction processes. However, when
it is possible, it has the ability to drastically reduce the amount of
waste by-product being produced and shrink the carbon footprint
quite substantially.
Construction is inevitable, but environmental damage doesn’t
have to be. The shift toward eco-friendly construction processes
and green building materials represents an exciting movement
in the construction industry toward a greener and more
sustainable future.
