people and includes four project managers and one environmental
manager, allows it to take on a wide range of projects.
“Being in a rural area, having a lot of expertise is very beneficial
because the municipalities out here need you to do a little bit of everything,”
he said. “They have a bunch of different problems, it’s not
just road-building, so you need to be diverse and have a whole array
of different talents and expertise to be competitive. It’s just not
economical to provide service for clients unless you have those different
skills.”
Gehlen says in a rural setting, it’s equally important to provide
customers with top level service, since many of them are also
neighbours.
“You have to have good quality service; otherwise, you’d be out of
business,” he said. “We always strive to provide our clients with innovative
solutions to solve their problems effectively and economically.
We pride ourselves on being trustworthy and reliable. We put
in the work required to ensure both the client and contractor are
satisfied, and we have successful projects.”
In addition to all the roadworks RMI has done over the years, the
company’s projects include the design and construction of three facilities
for transferring heavy crude from oil field trucks to railway
tank cars. This work was done in Lashburn, Unity, Sask., and Fort
McMurray, Alta., between 2010 and 2012.
The company also undertook the design, construction and
project management of the Unwin Grid Interchange in the Rural
Municipality of Wilton, Sask. This 2013 project involved major environmental
permits due to its proximity to the Battle River. According
to RMI, 190,000 cubic metres of earthwork was moved during construction
and many erosion control measures had to be undertaken
throughout the project.
Gehlen notes that his company is expanding and will take on
more structural projects and water treatment projects this year.
