“This is something that my dad has always done a lot of in his life,
being around asphalt projects,” Gehlen said.
As well, the person who oversees the company’s materials testing,
Bob Lyons, has more than 50 years of experience working in an
asphalt lab.
“He is an elite expert on asphalt properties,” said Gehlen.
Gehlen notes that materials testing for quality control and superior
design properties is a key aspect of RMI’s business.
“We do our own in-house testing of soils and aggregates and asphalt,
all of the materials that we use in our road construction,” he
said. “I would say our design and materials testing work is premier
in our industry, and we’re quite proud of that.”
RMI has both portable and stationary labs it utilizes for materials
testing, and it has other equipment, such as drones and amphibious
vehicles, that it uses for surveying.
According to Gehlen, RMI’s expertise extends beyond
road-building.
“Our bread and butter would be anything related to dirt, like
roads, railway beds, preparing sites for industrial facilities, environmental
assessments and clean-ups, those types of things,” he said.

Gehlen points out that RMI is a full-service provider, specializing in
municipal and heavy civil construction, and that it’s taken on many
water, drainage, environmental and sewer system projects in addition
