coffees and return to work. If it’s a large workforce,
then the workers can be tested on a rotating
basis, so perhaps a third of total staff are
tested every few days.
“When implementing SafetyScan, we first
‘baseline’ each worker to determine that they
are not impaired and reasonably well rested.
Going forward, when the worker is tested, the
new test is compared to each worker’s normal
baseline,” said Roberts.
The technology detects psychomotor impairment
through oculomotor impairment.
Psychomotor impairment is brain fatigue characterized
by things such as a slowing down of
thought processes, poor memory, or slow physical
reaction time. The technology looks at this
impairment through the eyes and watches for
things like reduced reaction time to visual stimulus
or imprecise eye movements.
“SafetyScan detects actual impairment now,”
said Roberts. “Drug testing – and, to a lesser
degree, alcohol testing – looks back in time. It
doesn’t measure (current) impairment. Drug
and alcohol testing try to imply impairment.
Traces of the drug or a metabolite of the drug
in the body does not mean that someone is impaired.
Traces of cannabis, for example, can be
found in the body weeks after use.”
