bank protection work. In total, about 600
Cable Concrete mats were produced at
the company’s manufacturing facility in
Humboldt, Sask., located about 85 kilo-metres
away from Dafoe. The mats were
trucked to the job site by Humboldt-based
Brockman Enterprises, which also is also
IECS Environmental Inc.’s concrete supplier.
McArthur states his company was proud
to participate in a large-scale construction
job that was relatively close to home. “It
was a turnkey service that we were able to
provide to a project right in our backyard,”
he said.
According to McArthur, IECS Environ-mental
Inc.’s involvement in the project re-sulted
in less wear and tear on local roads,
as well as fewer vehicle emissions, because
Cable Concrete doesn’t require as many
trucks to transport it than other materials
like riprap.
McArthur maintains the 35 or so truck-loads
of Cable Concrete mats that were
shipped to the Highway 6 jobsite were the
equivalent of about 500 dump trucks carry-ing
loose rock, the amount he says would
have been needed to cover the same area.
McArthur points out that because IECS
Environmental Inc. is a direct manufactur-er
and supplier, the cost of Cable Concrete is
very competitive compared to other erosion
control methods, especially when transport
costs are included in the equation.
“For this project, there were not a lot of
localized sources of rock located within a
couple of hours of the Quill Lakes,” he said,
adding that the cost of having to haul in
rock from long distances away likely made
the price of Cable Concrete more attractive
for the client.
McArthur cites safety as another impor-tant
feature of Cable Concrete systems,
noting the product is manufactured to
specifications that meet federal and provin-cial
Ministry of Transportation standards.
“Safety is a priority, absolutely,” he said. If
you have to swerve off the side of the road
to avoid hitting wildlife or another vehicle,
McArthur adds, you’ll likely be much safer
driving over a smoother traversable surface
like a finished Cable Concrete bank rather
than loose rock.
McArthur says the product’s smooth
top finish also allows operations and
maintenance vehicles and equipment
like lawnmowers to drive over it, making
Cable Concrete easy to install and main-tain.
Not only is it more accessible, but
Cable Concrete systems offer enhanced
aesthetics compared to riprap and of-fer
greater potential for wildlife habitat,
he adds.
Headquartered in Rodney, Ont., IECS
Environmental Inc. opened its Humboldt
production plant and office in 2014 and
joined the Saskatchewan Heavy Construc-tion
Association shortly afterwards.
McArthur says being an SHCA member
enables IECS Environmental Inc. to keep
up with all the building developments in
