CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Recently, the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan provided $81.7
million in funding for major highway improvements across our province.
Without question, this is great news for our industry.
As we know, investing in transportation infrastructure is vitally important in connecting
our rural communities, assisting in the exporting of local products, and in strengthening
our provincial and national economies.
With spring weather upon us, we’re nearing the starting point of another busy roadbuilding
season. This recent funding announcement will add to our workload.
The Saskatchewan government will contribute $41.5 million to the improvements,
while the federal government will contribute $40.2 million through the New Building
Canada Fund. The latter initiative is part of the Canada infrastructure plan, where $180
billion is expected to be spent over 12 years on green infrastructure, social infrastructure,
trade and transportation routes and in Canada’s rural and northern communities.
Locally, we can expect to see various improvements along approximately 260 kilometres
of provincial highway, including work along stretches of highways 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 10,
11, 14, 16, 33 and 39.
Among the major projects:
• 23 kilometres of road along Highway 3 east of Prince Albert and another 13
kilometres of road west of the city;
• Saskatoon will see 16 kilometres of road repair along Highway 7 and Highway
14 west of the city. Approximately 15 kilometres of roads on the eastbound and
westbound lanes of Highway 16 located east of the city will also be reworked;
• Regina will also see 21 kilometres of roadwork repair for Highway 33 between the
city and Kronau, and another 14 kilometres of road repair along Highway 6 north
and Highway 11 within the city;
• Passing lanes will be added along Highway 39 south of Regina toward Weyburn
and Estevan.
“This is really exciting for the province of Saskatchewan,” Minister of Highways and
Infrastructure Lori Carr said in a prepared statement. “They are not new projects being
announced. They are projects that have already been announced in the past. The funding
is just finally flowing.”
