And run it he did. The company was fairly
small when Wellings took over with only
a truck and four trailers. Today, the company
has about 90 trailers, 25 company trucks
and 12 to 14 lease operators. The equipment
ranges from six-axle lowbed trailers
and beaver-tailed step decks to three tandem
axle double drops and forklifts.
Wellings sold his interests in K&D to his
daughter Karen and son-in-law Kirk, and
that company has continued to thrive. With
his interests solely on Cara Dawn, the company
has become a leader in the transportation
of equipment and over-dimensional
loads with loads ranging from three-ton
hot-shot small shipments to 180,000-pound
lowbed loads and everything in between.
Dynamic business growth
Over the years, Cara Dawn Transport has
worked with numerous Saskatchewan road
builders and equipment dealers. The customer
list ranges from Degelman Industries
and Finning to Redhead Equipment and
Brandt Industries.
“We don’t do huge jobs, but we have a few
big ones,” said Wellings. “Most of our jobs
are moving eight, 10 and 15 pieces. We have
customers that we might move six to seven
